Weekly templates

A weekly template is a ready-made stretch of training — from one week up to 16 weeks, a whole macrocycle — that you insert onto an athlete's calendar in one go. You build it in an editor that looks and works like the calendar, and once it is inserted every workout plan is an ordinary workout plan you can adjust for that athlete. A weekly template longer than one week is a multi-week template.

For example: build a 12-week marathon block once, then insert it for each athlete who starts it, from the Monday they start.

Creating a template

Go to Templates → Weekly templates and click Add. The editor opens as a page with one week; add more with Add week at the bottom, up to 16.

Every template in the list shows how long it is — 1 week, 12 weeks — and clicking it opens the same editor, whatever its length.

You can also start from an athlete's calendar: in the week menu (⋮ next to the week number) choose Save as template, pick how many Weeks to take from that Monday, and the workout plans in that range — together with your notes — become one template. Weeks with nothing in them are kept as rest weeks.

info

Weekly templates are available in the browser application; the mobile app has single templates only.

Building it in the editor

The editor is a calendar for the template: each row is a day, labelled with its weekday, and the weeks are numbered Week 1, Week 2… instead of having dates.

On a day — the add button: Add workout plan, or from its arrow Insert template (a single template) and Add note. The day's ⋮ has Paste.

On a workout plan or note — click to open it; its ⋮ has Copy and Remove. Drag it to another day or another week.

On a week — the week's ⋮:

To top / Move up / Move down / To bottommoves the whole week, with everything in it
Insert empty weekadds an empty week above this one, to make room in the middle of a template
Insert templatelays another weekly template from this week (see below)
Copy week / Paste weekrepeats a week, e.g. to build the next week of a block and raise the volume
Remove weekremoves the week; the weeks after it move up, so the template has no gap

Every workout plan in a weekly template is its own copy. Pasting, adding a single template with Insert template, inserting another weekly template, and keeping a new workout plan in the single templates list too all make copies — so editing Thursday's easy run never changes Tuesday's, the single template it came from, or any other weekly template.

Weekly templates saved before version 4.16 can still share a workout plan with the single templates list. Opening such a workout plan in the editor gives the weekly template its own copy first, so your edit stays in this template.

Copying between the calendar and a template

The athlete's calendar and the template editor share one clipboard, so what you copy in one you can paste in the other.

  • From the calendar into a template — on the athlete's calendar copy a week (Copy plans or Copy week in the week's ⋮), a day (Copy day in the day's ⋮) or a single workout plan or note, then in the editor use Paste week, or Paste in the day's ⋮. The workout plans become the template's own copies, and with Copy week your notes come too. The athlete's own notes and activities without a workout plan stay on the calendar.
  • From a template onto the calendar — in the editor copy a week (Copy week), a workout plan or a note, then on the athlete's calendar use Paste week, or Paste in the day's ⋮. Zones are worked out for that athlete, and as a coach you paste the workout plans and notes as drafts.

For example: a week that worked well for one athlete becomes week 5 of your block.

Inserting a template into a week

Insert template in a week's menu puts another weekly template into this one, starting from that week. Nothing already in those weeks is removed — the new workout plans and notes are added after it.

If the template is longer than the weeks left in this one, you choose:

  • Extend the template — it grows to fit (up to 16 weeks), or
  • Insert only what fits — it keeps its length and the end of the inserted template is left out.

Notes

A note in a template becomes a note on the athlete's calendar, on the same day, when you insert the template. Tick Visible only to me for a reminder just for you; leave it unticked for a message the athlete will see. Visible notes are inserted the way the workout plans are: if the workout plans go onto the calendar as drafts, so do the notes, and the athlete sees them only once they're published.

Week summary

Next to each week you see what it plans: duration and distance per sport and activity, the totals for your main sports and for the others, and planned elevation gain when there is any. It updates as you edit, so you can see at a glance whether week 9 is bigger than week 8.

Saving

Click Save whenever you like — you stay in the editor and can keep working. Cancel or Back to list leave it; if you have unsaved changes, the app asks whether to Stay or Abandon changes.

tip

The content of a workout plan — its name, description, intervals — is saved as soon as you save it in its own window. Where workout plans sit, the weeks and the notes are saved with Save.

Inserting onto an athlete's calendar

On the athlete's calendar, open the week menu (⋮) and choose Insert template, then pick the template. It is laid out from that week's Monday.

  • A one-week template is inserted straight away.
  • A multi-week template asks first — Insert this template? — and tells you which template, from which day to which day, and how many weeks.

Inserting only adds: nothing the athlete already has on those days is removed or replaced — the new workout plans and notes appear next to it. As a coach you insert them as drafts — the athlete sees them once you publish them, for example with Publish week.

For several athletes at once

In the Weekly templates list, open the template's ⋮ and choose Insert for athletes. Select the athletes, the Monday the template should start on and — if you want — Publish after inserting. For a multi-week template you confirm the dates first. The template is then inserted for each athlete in turn.

For many athletes or a long template this can take a few minutes — the progress shows how many athletes are done, so keep the page open until it finishes. If it fails for some athletes, the app names them: try again only for those, because the others already have it and inserting always adds.

Publishing

You publish drafts from the week menu (⋮):

  • Publish week — the draft workout plans and notes of that week;
  • Publish following weeks — every draft from that week onwards (up to 52 weeks ahead), including weeks you don't see in the calendar yet. That's how you publish a whole multi-week template at once: open the menu of its first week. Drafts before that week stay unpublished.

A single day is published with Publish day in the day menu, and a single note with Publish in its menu. When you publish several entries at once, the athlete gets one notification with the date range of the published plan, not one per workout plan.

note

The Publish upcoming button on the banner at the bottom of the calendar publishes only the upcoming drafts in the weeks already loaded in the calendar.

Training zones in a multi-week template

Workout plans planned in a training zone get each athlete's own values when the template is inserted, so the same template fits everyone you give it to.

When an athlete's values change later — a new test, new performance data, an edited zone profile — the workout plans that are not done yet are updated:

  • up to about 20 weeks ahead (142 days — the longest template plus a month), so every week of a template inserted today keeps following the athlete's zones;
  • and up to 7 days back, for a workout plan that may still be done.

Workout plans further ahead than that keep the values they were inserted with until they come within that range. A workout plan the athlete has already done never changes.

Templates for other athletes should use zones

A target written as fixed numbers — say 145–160 bpm or 4:35/km — is the same for everyone. If you build a template to give to many athletes, plan its intervals in zones, so each athlete gets their own values.

Organising templates

Weekly templates of every length live on the Weekly templates tab and use the same folders, search, selection and ordering as single templates. Duplicate in a template's ⋮ makes an independent copy, with its workout plans, files and notes.
